چکیده

[1] We previously developed a method for inferring plasma sheet ion temperature and density from ionospheric observations. Using this method and DMSP observations for 1992, we present 2D profiles of the equatorial plasma sheet ion density and temperature for southward and northward IMF for b2i > 64 or Kp < 3. During periods of northward IMF, cold dense ions can be found plentifully along the plasma sheet flanks. However, during periods of southward IMF, the presence of these cold dense ions is noticeably diminished, especially at the dusk flank where the density peak is less discernable. These cold dense ions have been previously interpreted in terms of magnetosheath ion entry into the plasma sheet. Our result suggests that any mechanism proposed to transport magnetosheath ions from dusk LLBL to the plasma sheet along the dusk flank during periods of northward IMF would have to be able to do so efficiently over a large spatial scale.

A statistical study on the correlations between plasma sheet and solar wind based on DSP explorations

By using the data of two spacecraft, TC-1 and ACE (Advanced Composition Explorer), a statistical study on the correlations between plasma sheet and solar wind has been carried out. The results obtained show that the plasma sheet at geocentric distances of about 9∼13.4 Re has an apparent driving relationship with the solar wind. It is found that (1) there is a positive correlation between the du...

Interball-tail observations of vertical plasma motions in the magnetotail

The Interball spacecraft configuration favors, in contrast to previous experiments, investigation of vertical ion flows (GSM Vz). We use measurements of the CORALL instrument for the statistical study of Vz and Vy plasma flows in the mid-tail plasma sheet. In agreement with the previous observations, the mean Vy was positive on the dusk side and negative on the dawn side. When IMF was southward...

Magnetosphere preconditioning under northward IMF: Evidence from the study of coronal mass ejection and corotating interaction region geoeffectiveness

[1] Motivated by recent observations and simulations of the formation of a cold and dense plasma sheet in the tail of the magnetosphere under northward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) and of the direct influence of the plasma sheet density on the ring current strength, this paper aims at (1) highlighting how the coupling of these effects may lead to a preconditioning of the magnetosphere un...

Motion of the dayside polar cap boundary during substorm cycles: I. Observations of pulses in the magnetopause reconnection rate

Using data from the EISCAT (European Incoherent Scatter) VHF radar and DMSP (Defense Meteorological Satellite Program) spacecraft passes, we study the motion of the dayside open-closed field line boundary during two substorm cycles. The satellite data show that the motions of ion and electron temperature boundaries in EISCAT data, as reported by Moen et al. (2004), are not localised around the ...

Geotail observations of two-component protons in the midnight plasma sheet

Through the effort to obtain clues toward understanding of transport of cold plasma in the nearEarth magnetotail under northward IMF, we find that twocomponent protons are observed in the midnight plasma sheet (−10>XGSM>−30RE , |YGSM|<10RE) under northward IMF by the Geotail spacecraft. Since the twocomponent protons are frequently observed on the duskside during northward IMF intervals but har...
